Icicles Part 3

We finally decided that 6 foot daggers hanging from our house was not safe for anyone who might have to walk below, so on Wednesday (when we were home from school, again, with nothing to do) the kids and I decided to have some fun and knock all of the icicles down. By opening the windows in the upstairs and reaching out with a mop, we could reach them all. I should have taken a picture from the outside before we started. The eaves were covered with hundreds of icicles and some of them reached the bottom of the upstairs windows.

I did take a couple of pictures from inside the house though because I thought it looked so cool.

This is my favorite.
It is hard to tell, from the pictures, how big these icicles really were. The big one on the right was as wide as my hand. We must have knocked down a hundred or more pounds of ice.

Later that night, R and I heard a thump, followed by another thump, followed by a very loud thump. The first two sounds baffled us. The third, sounded like one of the kids falling out of bed so we waited and listened for the cry. None came. Then, we heard the avalanche...tons of snow sliding off of the roof. We stuck our heads outside to investigate and found this. (It was dark at the time so these pictures were taken Thursday morning.)

While cleaning up the mess at the bottom of the back stairs, we had to pick up and move several close to 50 pound blocks of ice that were part of the ice dam from the edge of the roof. Crazy winter. One of our neighbors also lost a gutter the other day, and our next door neighbor is about to loose their back gutter. Our front one is still holding on. We'll see if it lasts. Another snow and ice storm is coming tomorrow.

Holy Smokes! Thank goodness that happened at night and not when someone was standing below!
Awsome Icicle pictures. The last was my favorite too. It was like looking out of a jail window with icicle bars.
Stay warm. :)
